Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
